2008 BLOG Responses
The first forum is complete that was held at the American Legion Post 235. This event was hosted by the Republican Party Club. My take on this event is very different than that posed by some Bloggers and the NW Daily News Staffer. The "subjective" point of view provided left out some key points made by myself. Let me clarify some points that seemed to have been quickly forgotten, or not stated.
Gant stated, "I guess I have a fair amount of experience with the Sheriff's availability". Grant went on to say that he would call the Sheriff's Office and gets the Sheriff after a couple of rings. He also stated that on mornings he has seen the Sheriff at "The Breakfast Place" in Fort Walton Beach.
--My reply to this is simple; Your a NEWSPAPER reporter and not returning your phone call is asking for harsh comment in the Newspaper that is read by thousands of subscribers. However, if you're a business owner who had an employee embezzle $20,000 from its customer and can't reach the Sheriff after calling and leaving messages for a week, she wouldn't agree with your comment.
--My reply to the second statement Gant made is this; so you've seen the Sheriff at "The Breakfast Club" and you imply that if someone wants to see him that's where he'll be in the mornings. The Sheriff is elected by the people. The people don't run to him, in my opinion, he needs to go to the PEOPLE!
The last comment made by Mr. Gant is: "voters will demand a better reason to kick out 12-year incumbent than he doesn't attend enough community BBQs".
--My comment regarding the Sheriff's availability was that he is on a multitude of committees that CONSTANTLY and CONSISTENTLY take him out of county. Furthermore, the Sheriff has been selected as the President, Sheriff's Association for this next year. This lends credence to my statement that he will be "Out of County" even more than in the past. Lastly, unlike the Sheriff, I've walked the streets meeting our citizens and talking with them. Their biggest complaints are they never see the Sheriff, the Sheriff doesn't attend events, and he doesn't return phone calls to them. They always seem to get either his secretary or passed on to another person. Here's an additional note, I've provided my PERSONAL telephone number to the citizens so if they ever need me, just CALL! Did the incumbent and Patterson provide that, not to my knowledge!
